Rajmudra Architects was entrusted with the landscape design for Sahitya Sammelan Garden at Katraj, Pune, a public space envisioned to celebrate Maharashtra’s rich literary heritage while providing an engaging recreational environment for visitors. The project aimed to create a harmonious blend of landscape architecture, cultural expression, and community-oriented open spaces that reflect the significance of Marathi literature and literary movements.
The design focused on developing a thoughtfully curated garden environment where visitors can experience nature alongside elements that commemorate the history and contributions of Marathi Sahitya Sammelan and renowned literary personalities. Through the integration of landscape features, memorial elements, and interpretive spaces, the garden was envisioned as both a recreational destination and a cultural landmark.
Design Approach
- Creating expansive lawn areas that provide open green spaces for relaxation, social interaction, and public gatherings
- Designing elegant pedestrian walkways that guide visitors through various thematic zones of the garden while encouraging exploration and engagement
- Incorporating a centrally positioned Smarak (memorial feature) that serves as a focal point celebrating the literary legacy associated with Marathi Sahitya Sammelan
- Developing decorative stone walls featuring information, inscriptions, and historical details related to Marathi literature, literary movements, and Sahitya Sammelan traditions
- Designing pagoda structures and shaded seating areas that provide comfortable spaces for reading, reflection, and informal cultural interactions
- Enhancing the garden character through avenue plantation and trees along the compound boundaries, creating a green and visually appealing enclosure
- Integrating landscaped seating zones that allow visitors to enjoy the surroundings while engaging with the cultural and educational aspects of the garden
- Utilizing a balanced combination of hardscape and softscape elements to create a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing public environment
- Establishing visual connections between landscape features and commemorative elements to strengthen the cultural identity of the garden
Special emphasis was placed on creating an environment where culture, literature, and nature coexist harmoniously.
