Rajmudra Architects was engaged for the planning and landscape design of the Bhairavnath Lake Beautification and Conservation Project at Wagholi, Pune. Spread across approximately 38 acres, the project was envisioned as a comprehensive ecological and recreational development aimed at preserving the lake ecosystem while creating a vibrant public destination for the residents of Wagholi and surrounding areas.
The project focused on enhancing the environmental quality, visual appeal, and public accessibility of the lake precinct through a combination of conservation measures, landscape interventions, recreational amenities, and community-oriented spaces. Significant portions of the proposed development, including lake shaping, promenade pathways, retaining structures, fencing, and public activity zones, have already been successfully implemented on site.
Design Approach
- Developing a comprehensive lake conservation and beautification plan that strengthens both ecological sustainability and public usability
- Designing a continuous jogging and walking track along the rim of the lake, providing visitors with uninterrupted views of the water body and surrounding landscape
- Creating tree-lined pathways with coconut and other native plantation species to enhance shade, comfort, and the overall user experience
- Planning strategically located viewpoints and viewing decks along the lake edge to encourage interaction with the natural environment and maximize scenic vistas
- Developing a landscaped lake promenade that serves as a major recreational and social space for visitors of all age groups
- Incorporating dedicated sports and recreational facilities including basketball courts, tennis courts, and outdoor activity areas to promote active lifestyles within the community
- Designing children’s play zones, including sand play areas and open recreational spaces, to create family-friendly destinations within the development
- Providing pagoda seating and shaded gathering spaces that offer opportunities for relaxation, social interaction, and appreciation of the surrounding lake environment
- Enhancing parking areas through landscape plantation, decorative shrubs, and organized green buffers that improve the visual quality of the arrival experience
- Integrating retaining walls, fencing, and shoreline stabilization measures to support long-term conservation and protection of the lake precinct
- Preserving and strengthening the ecological character of the site through carefully planned plantation, open green spaces, and environmentally responsive landscape interventions
Special emphasis was placed on balancing environmental conservation with public accessibility. The landscape design encourages residents and visitors to engage with the lake through a series of recreational, cultural, and leisure-oriented experiences while ensuring the protection and enhancement of the natural ecosystem.
