Rajmudra Architects was entrusted with the landscape design and memorial development planning for the Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Smarak at Sambhaji Udyan, Pune. Developed on a site of approximately 0.75 acres, the project was envisioned as a dignified public space dedicated to honoring the legacy, courage, and contributions of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj while creating an engaging environment for visitors and the community.
The design sought to establish a harmonious balance between commemorative elements and landscape features, creating a destination where history, culture, and public interaction coexist. The memorial was planned to offer visitors an immersive experience that encourages reflection, learning, and appreciation of the remarkable life and achievements of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Design Approach
- Creating a prominent pedestal and memorial setting for the statue of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, establishing it as the focal point of the entire development
- Designing a sequence of display walls arranged in a semi-circular formation around the statue to present historical information, messages, and significant milestones associated with the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj
- Developing well-planned pedestrian pathways that guide visitors through the memorial precinct while encouraging interaction with the various commemorative elements
- Incorporating lush green lawn areas that provide visual balance and enhance the overall character of the public space
- Designing landscape mounds and planter beds to create depth, visual interest, and a structured landscape composition throughout the site
- Integrating a water body as a contemplative landscape feature that contributes to the serene and dignified atmosphere of the memorial
- Utilizing natural stone walls and architectural landscape elements to reinforce the sense of permanence, heritage, and cultural significance associated with the monument
