Project Overview
Project Summary
Client
Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation ( MTDC)
Rajmudra Architects was entrusted with the landscape design and hill development planning for the Khanderao Maharaj Temple precinct located atop a prominent hill in Ambasan. Spread across approximately 25 acres, the project was envisioned as a spiritual, cultural, and tourism destination that celebrates the religious significance of the temple while enhancing visitor experience through thoughtfully designed landscape and infrastructure elements.
Situated amidst the scenic surroundings of Ambasan village, the hilltop temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding settlement and natural landscape. The development focused on creating a harmonious blend of spirituality, heritage-inspired architecture, and environmentally sensitive landscape interventions that improve accessibility, comfort, and overall visitor engagement.
Design Approach
- Developing a comprehensive hill development master plan that integrates spiritual, recreational, and tourism-oriented spaces within the natural terrain
- Designing grand entrance gateways at both the foothill and hilltop temple precinct to create a memorable arrival experience for devotees and visitors
- Incorporating heritage-inspired architectural elements such as Buruj structures reminiscent of traditional Maharashtrian forts and temple precincts, enhancing the cultural identity of the site
- Creating a well-defined pathway network connecting the foothill to the temple, ensuring safe and comfortable pedestrian movement throughout the ascent
- Designing pergola seating zones and resting spaces along the pathway to provide comfort and shade for visitors during their journey to the temple
- Integrating shrubs, trees, and plantation zones along the pathway to enrich the visual experience and strengthen the connection with nature
- Providing safety railings, stone pitching, and erosion control measures to improve accessibility and ensure long-term site stability
- Planning viewing decks and gazebos at strategic locations to offer panoramic views of Ambasan village and the surrounding landscape
- Designing the temple precinct with landscape-enhanced courtyards, Deepmal, plantation zones, and gathering spaces that support religious and cultural activities
- Incorporating site infrastructure such as water storage facilities, UCR retaining walls with fencing, and supporting landscape features to ensure functionality and sustainability
Special emphasis was placed on preserving the natural character of the hill while introducing carefully planned interventions that enhance the visitor experience. The landscape design encourages devotees and tourists to engage with the site through a sequence of visual, spiritual, and recreational experiences as they progress from the foothill to the temple summit.
The proposed development transforms the Khanderao Maharaj Temple precinct into a landmark spiritual and tourism destination that reflects the cultural heritage of the region while offering modern amenities and enhanced accessibility. The project creates a unique destination where faith, nature, history, and community converge, contributing to the growth of religious tourism and the overall development of Ambasan and its surrounding region.
